BARCELONA

In a privileged position on the north-eastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula and the shores of the Mediterranean, Barcelona is the second largest city in Spain in both size and population. It is also the capital of Catalonia, 1 of the 17 Autonomous Communities that make up Spain. There are two official languages spoken in Barcelona: Catalan, generally spoken in all of Catalonia, and Castilian Spanish. The city of Barcelona has a population of 1.510.000, but this number spirals to more than 4.000.000 if the outlying areas are also included.

Gran Teatre del Liceu – (Opera)
La Rambla 51-59, Barri Gòtic. Metro Liceu.
The Liceu has gone from strength to strength of late, steadily increasing the number of performances but still often selling out. The flames that swept away an outdated, rickety structure a decade ago cleared the decks for a fine new opera house. By comparison with the restrained façade, the 2,340-seat auditorium is an impressively elegant, classical affair of red plush, gold leaf and ornate carvings, but the mod cons include seat-back subtitles in various languages that complement the Catalan surtitles above the stage.
